# Rejected and skipped segments

> Learn why a run leaves some segments untranslated and how to make it try again.

A run does not always translate everything that is missing. Four situations hold segments back, and each has its own remedy.

## Rejected by QA

Every machine translation passes through [model-free QA checks](https://diglot.sh/machine-translation/qa-checks). A segment with an error-level issue is sent to the model once more with the problems listed, controlled by `mt.qaRetries`. If it still fails after the retries, the segment is rejected: no record is written, and the segment is listed in `.diglot/rejected/<locale>.json` together with the reasons.

Later runs skip a listed segment until its source changes. To try anyway, set `retry-rejected: 'true'` for one run. A successful translation removes the segment from the file. The job summary shows rejected segments with their issues, and the `rejected` output counts them.

Typical reasons are a missing placeholder, markup the grammar doesn't allow or a translation identical to its source. Fixing the cause is often easier than retrying: add a glossary entry or a style rule, or translate the segment by hand by writing its record.

## Rejected by a reviewer

A reviewer rejects a translation by marking its record `review: rejected`. The Action keeps such records as they are and ships them in the bundles. It does not translate those segments again until their source changes, and it does not use them as the basis for an update. The `Skipped` column in the job summary counts them.

## Deferred by a limit

Segments that `limit` pushed to a later run are counted as deferred. They need no action: the next run picks them up.

## Disabled locales

A locale with machine translation disabled gets no new records. Segments that are missing there stay untranslated until you enable it or add records by hand.
